Kalshi Sports Prediction Markets
Technically, Kalshi sports betting is not a phrase the company uses. The platform offers event contracts on sports outcomes, regulated by the CFTC as financial instruments, not wagers. In practice, you take a position on whether a team wins, a player hits a target, or a match goes a certain way.
Sports markets now account for more than 90% of platform volume and revenue. What is available:
- Pre-game winner markets for NFL, NBA, MLB, PGA Tour events, and more
- Live in-game markets during major events, with the same fee formula as pre-game
- Player prop markets, sometimes with slightly different multipliers than team-level markets
- Parlay-style combined contracts with a single fee on the combined position, not stacked per leg
Who Founded Kalshi
Tarek Mansour (CEO) and Luana Lopes Lara (COO) are the Kalshi founders. They met as students at MIT, both took finance roles at major institutions, and noticed that a large portion of trading activity was ultimately driven by opinions on future events. They built Kalshi to make that direct and regulated.
Luana became the world's youngest self-made woman billionaire in December 2025 after the company raised £1 billion at an £11 billion valuation. A second round in 2026 pushed the Kalshi valuation to £22 billion. Both founders hold roughly 12% of the company each.
Is Kalshi Legit and Who Is Behind It?
Yes. In November 2020, Kalshi became the first company to receive a Designated Contract Market (DCM) licence from the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission. That is the same regulatory body that oversees US futures exchanges. Customer funds are held separately from operating funds, as required by CFTC rules.
Tarek Mansour and Luana Lopes Lara are the Kalshi founders, both MIT graduates who previously worked at Goldman Sachs, Citadel, and Bridgewater. The platform has raised £2.8 billion across 11 funding rounds, with backing from Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Coatue, and Morgan Stanley. The Kalshi valuation reached £22 billion in 2026. It now powers prediction market integrations inside Robinhood and Coinbase.
Is Kalshi Available in the UK?
Yes. Kalshi is available to UK users and British traders can register, fund an account, and start trading event contracts on the platform. The sign-up process is straightforward: you need a valid email, phone number, and a government-issued ID for identity verification. The full process takes under five minutes.
A UK version of Kalshi gives British users access to the same 500+ markets as the main platform: sports, elections, economics, crypto, and more. Deposits work via ACH transfer, wire, debit card, or crypto. Everything is denominated in USD, so your deposits convert at the current exchange rate when you fund your account.
